What is a BiPAP Machine and How Does It Work?
2 min read

If your doctor has mentioned BiPAP therapy, or you've been struggling with a CPAP machine that doesn't feel comfortable, you've probably wondered: what exactly is a BiPAP machine, and how is it different from the more commonly known CPAP?
What Does BiPAP Stand For?
BiPAP stands for Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure. Unlike a standard CPAP machine, which delivers one constant, fixed air pressure throughout the entire breathing cycle, a BiPAP machine delivers two different pressure levels: a higher pressure when you breathe in (inhalation) and a lower pressure when you breathe out (exhalation).
How Does a BiPAP Machine Work?
During sleep, air is delivered through a mask connected to the machine via a tube. The device continuously monitors your breathing pattern and automatically switches between the two pressure settings in sync with your natural breathing rhythm. This makes exhaling noticeably easier compared to a single-pressure CPAP machine, since you're not pushing air out against the same high pressure you inhaled with.
Who Needs a BiPAP Machine?
BiPAP therapy is typically prescribed for people who:
- Have moderate to severe sleep apnea and find CPAP pressure uncomfortable to exhale against
- Have COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) alongside sleep apnea
- Experience certain neuromuscular conditions that affect breathing strength
- Need respiratory support beyond what standard CPAP provides
Your doctor or a sleep specialist will typically determine this through a sleep study, and will prescribe the exact pressure settings your machine should be configured to.
